About Me

I’m Nimchi, a Chinese artist born in Hong Kong. My artistic journey has taken me from the Netherlands, where I grew up, to the UK, where I studied art, and then to France, before recently settling in Spain with my husband and our two children. My work is deeply influenced by personal experiences, including the loss of both my birth and adoptive fathers to cancer during my childhood. My birth mother has been a guiding presence throughout my life. I was very close to my adoptive mother, whose love and support were a constant in my life but also a strange and complex influence. When she became ill and passed away, I was lost for a long time without her. These experiences profoundly shaped my art, weaving themes of emotion, beauty, and life’s complexities into each piece.

Through bold, textured strokes, I aim to capture the chaotic beauty of existence and the resilience of the human spirit. Each painting is an invitation for viewers to find their own reflections within the layers, offering a space for connection and introspection.

Artist Statement

My painting process is instinctive and free-flowing. I draw my subjects repeatedly until they become as familiar as a signature, allowing me to focus on the vibe when I paint. Each piece is built up through layers, adding depth, texture, and emotional intensity. Ink splashes are the final touch, bringing rhythm and spontaneity to the work. My art captures the chaos of life up close and its beauty from afar, where emotion, death, and beauty intertwine in bold, textured strokes. I often paint flowers because of their fleeting nature, a reminder of how quickly life can pass. Animals, on the other hand, are a generalisation of people—symbols of our behaviours, relationships, and emotions. I also paint people, capturing the moments where their vulnerability and strength intersect, exploring the layers of human experience. My hope is that my art becomes a space for you to see your own stories in a new light, to feel understood, and to find a little piece of yourself in every brushstroke.
